ALS History

Anarmani Liberty School (ALS), established in 2063BS (2007CE) at Birtamode, Eastern Nepal, caters education to the children of Northeastern migrants, and their relatives relocated to Jhapa from several hill districts. In 2020, students from 32 ethnic groups have been enrolled. In addition, ALS also admits students seeking quality education, either as day scholars or boarders.

Until 2007, there had been no school established in the region for such pupils as there are a large number of families migrated from Northeast India (better-known as India's rainbow region) and Taplejung, Tehrathum, Ilam, and Panchthar districts to the plains of Jhapa district.

The founder of ALS Mr. Puran Pd Bista, along with four others, had already established Occidental Public School in Kathmandu for the children of Northeast migrants. The school has earned a good reputation and helped mobilize the families of Northeast migrants.

As the rainbow region harbors diverse languages, cultures and religions, Occidental in Kathmandu was conceived as a secular idea to accommodate the sentiments of every family living in Nepal.

In a similar vein, the foundation stone of the main building was laid on 16th May 2003, and, four years later, ALS was inaugurated by Krishna Dharabasi, a well-known litterateur, currently residing in the United States.

The initial plan was to start the school in 2004 but the raging Maoist insurgency across the country delayed the plan. The insurgency began in February 1996 and lasted for a decade. The plan to establish ALS couldn't materialize in 2005 either.

As a result, ALS was registered on 12th Magh 2063 BS for the 2063 academic session (2007) following the signing of eight-point agreement between the warring Maoist rebels and the Seven Party Alliance in New Delhi. This Delhi pact eventually helped restore peace through the Mass (people's) Movement which culminated in declaring Nepal a new republic.

The word 'liberty' means a fettered freedom. The intention to bring the word to the fore is to offer every student -- irrespective of race, caste and creed - a global atmosphere at a reduced scale. Initially, ALS launched classes from International Pre-school (IPS) through Class VI. Gradual up-gradation, in a span of six years, propelled ALS to be High School in 2070 BS (2013).

  • In 2070, for the first time, eleven students from ALS appeared in the School Leaving Certificate Examination held by the National Examinations Board, Ministry of Education.
